William Hunter
Smith
September 5, 1937 – May 19, 2026
Smith, William Hunter (Billy) September 5, 1937 - May 19, 2026 Passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, May 19th at Idlewyld Manor at the age of 88. Survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jean Bell Smith (Semple) and their children, Carolyn (Carlos) and Lorraine (Natalie), his grandchildren Alia and Caleb, and his grand-dog Charlie, siblings Andrew (Jeanette), Robert (Annette), Jean and Margaret. Predeceased by parents William Hunter Smith and Williamina Smith (nee Hartley) and siblings Tina (Bobby) and Maud Hunter (nee Smith). Always the one to provide a helping hand. A fierce advocate for members' rights as a union leader at WABCO where he worked as a machinist for 30 years. Bill’s hobby of tinkering with cars made him a self-taught mechanic. A favourite soccer coach to many over the years he dedicated his time and energy to his players, encouraging them to reach their full potential. He will be remembered for his booming voice on and off the field. He was always laughing at his own jokes, making it difficult to hear the punchlines. A loving grandfather who would do anything and everything for his grandchildren. He loved his trips to Florida and his strolls along Daytona Beach that he took with his wife, children, and grandchildren. His priority was spending time with his family whom he loved infinitely. Scottish by birth and a proud “Canadian by choice.” He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. We are so thankful for the exceptional care Dad received at Idlewyld Manor from Dr. Chan, Nicole and all the staff who cared for him in the Oakwood and Spruce View home areas. A special thanks to Ron Jennings for being such a good friend. Rest easy, Billy, until we meet again. “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die” (Thomas Campbell). In lieu of flowers, donations to Idlewyld Manor would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences may be made at www.affordableburielandcremation.ca
A private celebration of life will take place at a later date.
