Elizabeth Mary Teresa Gmur {Suzy)
December 25, 1928 - March 17, 2023 (age 94)
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Suzy who passed away at Willowgrove Longterm Care Residence on Friday, March 17th, 2023 after a fall in December that caused head trauma. She was the devoted wife to John (deceased) for 45 years, loving mom to Robbie
(deceased) and Debbie (Sandy), S\veet Nana to Jeffrey and Breken (Alicia) and adoring
Great-nana to Katrina, Marcus, and Jameson. She is also survived by her brother Ed (Yvonne) and many nieces and nephews.
Born to Edward and Elizabeth Spencer, Suzy, called Betty in her younger days, was born and grew up in Midland. She married lier high school sweetheart, Bob, and the couple had two children, Robbie and Debbie. They moved frequently following Bob's job in radio and television. Sadly, Robbie passed away in 1961 (age 9) and Bob was killed in a car crash in 1973. By then, Suzy and Bob had returned to Midland where Sue continued working for Bell Canada as an operator. In 1975, Sue was introduced to John by her niece who knew personally what a wonderful man he was. Within a few months, John and Suzy were married. They settled in Midland and later moved to the village of Eclen Mills near Guelph after John began working at the Toronto Airport. They were active members of the small community and enjoyed a wonderful life there for 33 years before moving from the home they loved to a retirement community in Burlington at the end of 2019 to be closer to famity.
Suzy and John loved to travel and enjoyed trips to many destinations including
Europe, Hawaii, eastern Canada, and their favourite, Aruba. They also bought a
motorhome and with it, they camped near Godridge and also toured Ontario and parts of the USA, as far south as Florida's Disney World. They spent some time at the cottage with Debbie's family and when John's brother, Charlie, visited from Switzerland. In later years, they enjoyed playing cards or Scrabble together. Suzy was also an avid reader.
Suzy was a talented and at1istic lady. She did landscape oil paintings and played accordion and piano. She played a mean "boogie-woogie" and had been the only girl in a high school band. She crocheted and knitted, even knitting scarves for herself and family only a year ago. When she was younger, she loved to dance.
Suzy will be missed by everyone who knew her. She was a gentle, quiet lady with a great sense of humour. She didn't like to be alone and especially loved family get-togethers.
The family would like to thank staff from Willowgrove, Joseph Brant Hospital (5N), Home and Community Care Support Services (LHIN), and La Salle Retirement Community for all of their help provided to manage Suzy's care and comfort. Cremation has occurred. A Celebration of Life is being planned and will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Canadian Cancer Society, Salvation Army, or Heart and Stroke Foundation would be welcome.
