Sean Maher
August 19, 1968 – May 31, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sean Maher, age 57, on May 31, 2026.
Sean leaves behind his beloved wife, soulmate and best friend, Polliann ("Polly") Maher, and his cherished sons, Connor Maher and Mitch Maher, and daughter-in-law Nicole. He is survived by his father, Ted Maher, and was predeceased by his mother, Effie Maher. Sean will be deeply missed by his sister Shelley Maher and brother-in-law Ted Legacy, as well as his nephews Ethan (Melissa) and Seth.
Sean was a beloved son-in-law to Don Markham and was predeceased by his mother-in-law Mavis Markham. He is fondly remembered by his brothers- and sisters-in-law: Tyler Markham, Missy (Dom) Toscani, and Doug Markham(Sheryl) . He was a much loved uncle to Liz (Mike) Hazzard, Nicole (Brad) David, Clay Markham, Spencer Markham (Ian), and Hana Markham. Sean also treasured his role as Great-Uncle to Kris Hazzard (Leora), Abbey Hazzard, Rachael Hazzard, Maddison David, and Derek David.
Born and raised in Stoney Creek, Ontario, he played baseball and hockey growing up and was somewhat of a legend in highschool. He was lucky to have many lasting friendships from Highschool and sports that have carried on throughout his lifetime. Sean joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1988 and proudly served his country until 1995. During his military career, he was posted to Gagetown, New Brunswick; Lahr, Germany; Ottawa, Ontario; and Petawawa, Ontario. He did a six month Peacekeeping tour in Bosnia in 1994/1995. While serving, Sean built friendships that became family. The connections he made through the military brought him a lifetime of camaraderie, support, and cherished memories.
Sean was known for his larger-than-life personality. He was often the life of the party, with a booming voice and a contagious laugh that could fill a room. Many joked that he had a voice made for radio. He had a deep love for movies, especially action films and westerns, and enjoyed a wide variety of music. Throughout his life, Sean cultivated many circles of friends, each drawn to his humor, loyalty, and unmistakable presence.
Though he could appear tough on the outside, those who knew him best understood that beneath that exterior was a gentle, affectionate teddy bear with a generous spirit and a heart full of compassion.
As life went on, Sean’s love and appreciation for his family deepened. As an older brother, he was both fiercely protective and wonderfully annoying, always ready with advice, a joke, or a playful tease. He was the fun uncle who could make everyone laugh with his colourful language, quick wit, and larger-than-life sense of humour. At heart, Sean was a big kid who never lost his ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him.
Of all his accomplishments, Sean was most proud of his sons, Connor and Mitch. They were his greatest joy, and the love and pride he felt for them was immeasurable. He celebrated their successes, supported them through life's challenges, and he shared his love of westerns and action films with them, enjoying those simple moments together.
Sean and Polly shared a true love story built on friendship, loyalty, and unwavering commitment. Together, they created a partnership that anchored them through life's many ups and downs. Side by side, they faced challenges, celebrated victories, and navigated life's journey as a team. Their bond was a source of strength, comfort, and love that endured through every season of life.
Following his military service, Sean faced significant mental health challenges. With courage and determination, he continued his healing journey throughout his life. Rather than allowing those struggles to define him, he used the lessons he learned to help others. For the past 15 years, Sean dedicated himself to supporting fellow veterans through peer support, offering understanding, encouragement, and hope to those facing similar battles. In 2020, he became a certified meditation instructor, further expanding his ability to guide and support others on their own paths toward healing and wellness.
Sean's kindness, empathy, and willingness to help those in need left a lasting impact on countless lives. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel seen, heard, and valued. His legacy lives on not only through his family and friends but also through the many veterans and individuals whose lives he touched.
Sean will be remembered for his laughter, his strength, his unwavering love for family and friends, and his commitment to helping others find their way through difficult times. He was a kind soul with a big heart, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Sean will be missed by his service dog, Neville, who was his loyal companion for the past 9 years. As well as our other fur babies, Duke, Ruby, Smokey, Bandit and Mia.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sherman, Dr. Sathiyapalan, and Dr. Ashbourne for their amazing care and guidance. Special thanks to VON Nurse Susanna, who was an unwavering source of support for the past 20 months.
In lieu of flowers the Family invites you to donate to one of the two programs listed that Sean highly regarded.
