Rita Lynne Dextras
June 13, 1970 – May 11, 2026
With broken hearts and profound sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Rita Lynne Dextras (Herman) at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton on May 11, 2026 at the age of 55. Born and raised in Hamilton, Rita was the cherished and adored mother of Ashley Herman who served as her primary caregiver, the late Robert Dextras (2008), and Christine Dextras, and the loving and supportive grandmother of Evangeline (“Angel”) Dextras.
Rita was predeceased by her mother, the late Marie Woods [Bernier] (2022), and by her grandparents, the late Loretta (1987) and Edmond (1983) Bernier.
Loving and kind sister and aunt to John Herman of Hamilton (Daniel and Eric); the late Joanne Budgell (2018) and her husband, Calvin of Brantford (Donna-Marie, Jennifer and Charlie); the late Phillip; and Paul Herman and his wife, Karen of Guelph (Matthew, Brian and Steven).
Rita enjoyed the simple things in life from reading a good paranormal romance book to watching shows and playing games with her children, granddaughter and their friends. She would rarely pass at the opportunity to go to the Mandarin Restaurant for a good feast of crab legs and shrimp!
Although faced with many health challenges over the years due to complications of diabetes, Rita was always full of gratitude to the many doctors, nurses, healthcare providers, and first responders who provided wonderful care to her along the way. Special thanks to her dear friends, Rick and Jeanette Ford of Stoney Creek for always being there for Rita when she needed them.
In memory of Rita, her family requests that you provide random acts of kindness for others.
“So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don’t think we’re far apart,
For every time you think of me,
I’m right there in your heart.”

As an expression of sympathy, donations to the family would be sincerely appreciated c/o
