John “Jan” de Wilde
January 2, 1946 – March 29, 2026
John de Wilde passed away at home in the early hours of March 29, 2026, at the age of 80, following a courageous battle with heart complications and kidney disease.
Born on January 2, 1946, in the Netherlands, John later made his life in Canada, where he built a legacy grounded in hard work, resilience, and deep family values. He was the beloved son of the late Jacob and Lammigje “Lynn” de Wilde and grew up alongside his siblings Margje Jackson (Gwyn) and Jack de Wilde (Becky), and his late sister Rigtje Jensen. His early years and family roots remained an important part of his life, and he often shared stories of his upbringing with those he loved.
John was the devoted and loving husband of Doreen de Wilde, his partner of 58 years, who passed away suddenly in 2025. Their marriage was a true example of unwavering love and companionship. They were inseparable—sharing laughter, adventures, and a deep commitment to their family. Her absence since her passing was deeply felt, and there is comfort in knowing they are reunited once again.
He was a proud and dedicated father to Terry (Sherri) and Rob (Carrie), and a cherished grandfather to Jesse Lahaise, Maria de Wilde (Nathan), and Rebecca de Wilde-Jackson (Eric). Honorary father to Sean (Sue) Merritt and Anthony (Mary) Van Hell. Treasured grandfather to Logan and Tyson Van Hell. John was eagerly anticipating the arrival of his first great-grandchild in April, a milestone that brought him great joy and pride.
John will be fondly remembered by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Bill and Eunice Lowe, many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
During his working years, he was a proud employee of A. Cope & Sons, CBM concrete, and the Ministry of Transportation. He then spent many years working for Miller Maintenance, where he built not only roads but lasting friendships that he continued to reminisce about right up until his final days.
A man of incredible skill and patience, John could fix or build just about anything. From rebuilding engines to constructing shelves, he passed down his mechanical abilities and problem-solving mindset to his children and grandchildren. He taught through action—demonstrating patience, determination, and an unmatched work ethic. He rarely took a day off and never complained, even in difficult moments, always reassuring those around him with a quiet strength.
John had a deep love for the outdoors and for making the most of life. He treasured time spent in Tory Hill—quadding, fishing, boating—and camping trips to Sauble Beach. He had a passion for classic cars, scenic drives, and reminiscing about his youth, including time spent growing up in Elora with family and friends. Whether working on demolition derby cars, attending baseball games, or enjoying a rye and ginger, John had a way of making every moment meaningful.
Above all, John was a family man. He and Doreen were always present— playing, supporting, and creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unforgettable memories. He instilled in his family the values of hard work, gratitude, resilience, and the importance of enjoying life.
Though his loss is deeply felt, there is peace in knowing he is no longer in pain and has been reunited with the love of his life. One can imagine John and Doreen together again—perhaps sitting side by side at Sauble Beach or in their camper, enjoying the simple moments they cherished most.
Forever loved, always remembered.
Special thanks to the staff at St Joseph’s Dialysis Unit for always advocating for John, chatting with him, and making his days a little bit brighter.
