It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Allan Smith, who left this world on February 10, 2026, at the age of 60. Richard was a devoted father and loyal friend a man whose strength, kindness, and generosity touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Richard was a proud and dedicated leader, serving as President of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1654 from 2002 until his passing. He was also an officer of the GLDC beginning in 2003, later advancing to the role of Vice President. He carried his leadership responsibilities with integrity, commitment, and a deep sense of responsibility to those he represented, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and community.
Richard formed lasting friendships throughout his life and was deeply valued by his close friends and extended family, all of whom will miss him dearly.
Born to his loving parents, Ellen O’Hara and Jim Smith, Richard will be remembered by his loving family, including his son, Jimmy Blacklocksmith (Ashley Landry), and his daughter, Jessica Smith (Giovanni Gregoris). He will also be deeply remembered by his brothers and sister, cousins, aunts, and uncles, and cherished by his wonderful grandchildren, who will continue to carry his memory in their hearts forever. Though he is gone from this world, the love he gave and the lessons he taught will live on in those who knew him.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at a later date. The family asks that he be remembered for the love, laughter, and strength he brought into the world.
Forever loved. Forever missed. Never forgotten.
