Nettie Patershuk

After a brief illness, Nettie passed away peacefully at Hamilton General Hospital on January 2, 2022 in her 95th year. She will be profoundly missed by her husband Lawrence, her children Debra Wingfield (husband Martyn) and Rodney (wife Diane), her four grandchildren – Chelsea (husband Trever), Dayna, Tegan and Alexandra - and her great-granddaughter, Palmer. As a grandmother (known to many as “Bonicka”) and great-grandmother, she was in her element. She will also be missed by her extended family across Canada. Nettie was born February 20, 1927, in Preeceville, Saskatchewan, as the 2nd daughter and 5th child of 6 to Annie and Steve Rivney. At age 19 she was accepted at Yorkton General Hospital School of Nursing, completing her 3 year training program, writing her provincial R.N. examinations and receiving her R.N. diploma in 1949. She worked as a general duty nurse at Preeceville Union Hospital and Grenfell Union Hospital, which is how she met her husband Lawrence, who was a patient in her care. On June 5, 1952 she married Lawrence Lynn Patershuk at St. John’s United Church in Preeceville, Saskatchewan, and then they moved to Hamilton, Ontario. In October 1952 after receiving her registration from the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) she began working as a general duty nurse at the Hamilton General Hospital. In 1955 she transferred to the Henderson Convalescent Hospital (later renamed Henderson General and then renamed Juravinski Hospital), working in different areas until her retirement. Nettie retired from nursing in 1986, after completing 25 years of service with the Hamilton Civic Hospitals, qualifying as a member of their 25-year Quarter Century Club. Nettie’s family wishes to thank the staff of the Burn Trauma Unit at the Hamilton General, who supported both Nettie and her family with caring and compassion during her illness.
