Nelson Howard Richard Stewart

February 28, 1934 — May 9, 2024

Nels was a lifelong athlete, having won multiple awards and championships in hockey, baseball and bowling. He played Big Four fastball and was even chosen as MVP and most sportsmanlike player as a junior in fastball at Woodland Park and won MVP at a provincial hockey tournament. He was also a well-respected baseball umpire, and hockey, football and broomball referee. He served with Hamilton Police Services for nearly 35 years, having started on motorcycles in the 1950s. Nels was known by many people for his sense of humour and being a Lime Ridge mall-walker. He loved ice cream, church dinners and The Burger Barn and enjoyed having a cup of coffee with friends. Husband to Joan (nee Bamford) and father to Nelson and Lesley, as well as Kim (and Karen and Christine deceased) from his previous marriage. Son to William and Ellen, and brother to Jack, Wilf and Lloyd, and grandfather to Donna, Jack, Leah, Danny, Ashley and Jimmy.

A wake is being planned at the Villages of Glancaster on June 1 from 1-4.

Nels loved the bagpipes so, if interested, please consider making a donation in his name to the Hamilton Police Pipe Band: pipeband@hppb.ca
