Joseph William Hodgson

December 24, 1944 — July 20, 2024

Born December 24, 1944 in Sudbury to James P. Hodgson and Joan (Johnson), Winnifred Capriolti and Dr. Bernard Hodgson were his siblings.


Joe was raised in Hamilton and attended St. Peter and Paul Cathedral and University of Toronto. Joe was a gifted student and at 6’3 ½”, 220 lbs a very gifted athlete in football, hockey, boxing and his favorite, judo, where he met his wife of 52 years, Patricia Sogan who was also an early black belt.


Upon graduation, Joe worked in Ottawa for the Cabinet Min, responsible for Health and Welfare Indigenous Affairs and Labour. He got to present the P.M Pierre Elliot Trudeau an honourary Black Belt with Mitch Kawasaki of Kawasaki Renodkan Judo Academy.


Later, Joe went to McMaster to become a metallurgist until his retirement. Joe was married to Patricia (Sogan) and had 3 beautiful daughters; Anastasia, Katherine (deceased), and Elizabeth. He had 5 wonderful grandchildren; Elliot, Sophia, Alexander, Adaline, and Eudoria.


During his last ten years, Joe suffered with many serious health issues. May he now find peace. Thank you to the wonderful staff at St. Peter’s who helped him on his last journey.
