In Loving Memory of Joe Volchoff (1950–2025)

Through tears of immense sadness, we announce the passing of Joe Volchoff on December 26,
2025, at the age of 75.

Joe was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his
wife, Tracy; stepson Jon (Catherine); stepdaughter Katharine (Stephen); and son Joseph Jr.;
brothers Dennis, Larry (Rochelle) and Paul (Susan); and sister Debi (Chet), as well as many
nieces and nephews. Joe had six amazing grandchildren, Payton, Cloe, Brody, Loryn, Fallon
and Kierya. Joe was predeceased by his mother, Stella; father, Paul; and his brother, Terry.

Born and raised in Hamilton, Joe left school at age 16 when he was ordered to pay his school
fees and promptly advised the principal, in true “Joe V” fashion, “I didn’t learn nothing, so I’m
not paying nothing!” Always right off the rib even from a young age, everyone knew where
they stood with Joe. He went to work on the docks with his father, where he learned to drive
“large cars,” as he liked to call them.

He hauled many loads, both stateside and locally, including Valparaiso, Indiana; Detroit,
Michigan; London; Windsor; Montreal; and many other cities. He then moved on and learned
to drive two semi-trailers at once, aka “trains.” He would travel to Chicoutimi, Quebec, during
the winter, hauling those two trailers onto the ice awaiting his turn to unload—a daredevil from
an early age.  He was an independent broker for many years, driving for Jet Transport, Laidlaw, Mel Hall,
and Commisso’s.

Joe was an entrepreneur from the young age of 10 when he started delivering newspapers
and was featured in The Hamilton Spectator as Carrier of the Week. He later returned to the
job, dedicating another 20+ years to The Spec, delivering in Burlington and Hamilton.

Joe had an infectious laugh, a caring heart, and commanded any room he was in. A very
social person, blessed with the gift of gab, he made many friends and acquaintances over the
years. Most notably, Joe was a friend of Bill Wilson and this past July celebrated 30 years of
continuous sobriety. He was a member of the Gemini Group on the Hamilton Mountain, where
he formed many cherished friendships and memories. He always enjoyed offering guidance to
newcomers, helping anyone who was struggling, or simply sharing a handshake, a smile, and
hugs.

Joe comes from a musically gifted family and enjoyed many get-togethers with friends and family during his lifetime.
He sang at his sister’s wedding at St. Augustine’s Church, leaving the congregation in tears
during Communion with his rendition of Ave Maria, and once won a karaoke contest at Aceti’s
in Hamilton.

A good man is the foundation of a happy family. Not perfect, not flawless—but present. Joe
worked hard, loved even harder, and made sure his family felt safe. His strength was not loud
but was consistent, coupled with a quiet, unwavering bond of friendship, honesty, and
unquestionable loyalty.  According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later
date.

In lieu of flowers, Joe requested donations be made to the Stedman Community Hospice, who
took such wonderful care of him during his final days.

“If I had my life to live over again, I would find you sooner so we could love you longer.” ❤️
