Jennifer Street

November 12, 1936 — October 28, 2021

We are sad to announce the passing of Jennifer (Jenny) Anne Street at the Hamilton General Hospital on October 28, 2021 at 84 years of age. Jenny was born in Ashtead, Surrey in the UK on November 12, 1936. She sailed to Canada as a child nine years later, with her mother Ethel Joyce Street. Cherished wife of Allen Calvin. Much loved mother of Wendy (Len), Lynda (James), Mike (Linda) Carrie (Rodger) and stepmother to Mike (Liz). Loved and missed by her grandchildren, Katrina, Layne, Aaron and great-grandchildren, Luna, Oisin and Aedan. Dear sister to George (Ginette). Jenny was a fun, energetic and dynamic mother. She planned family picnics, camping adventures and holidays to Gaspe, northern Ontario and to family summer camps. In her teens Jenny won best actress and best director awards at the Ottawa Little Theatre where she acted with Christopher Plummer. She brought that same ability to breathe life into a story, to reading the Hobbit by the campfire for her four kids. Jenny was very proud of her family. She said many times that she had always wanted her children to become the unique and special people they were intended to be. Jenny was an exceptional listener with a deep compassion for those who were suffering or disadvantaged. In middle age, Jenny went back to high school, then university and obtained a bachelor’s degree in social work and political science. She later obtained a Master’s degree in Public Health administration while serving in senior leadership roles at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton and at the Mental Health Centre in Penetanguishene. A self-described “policy wonk”, Jenny was a Board member of the Ontario division of the Canadian Mental Health Association and past President of the Ontario Social Development and Planning Council. A devoted Christian and spokesperson for the disadvantaged throughout her life. Jenny spent many hours collaborating with her fellow parishioners and friends focused on community development at Christ Church Cathedral in Hamilton, where she won a diocesan award for volunteerism. The family are grateful to Mom’s physician Dr. Emily Ow and retired physician & friend Dr. Ken Burgess for their support and care of Mom over the years. We are also grateful to the kind and compassionate staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Hamilton General hospital, who cared for her in her later years. A private family service will be held this year at the Columbarium at Christ Church Cathedral Funeral arrangements will be made for a service in the future, also to be held at the Cathedral. Donations in Jenny’s memory can be made to Christ Church Cathedral, 252 James St. North, Hamilton or to St. Matthews House, in Hamilton.
