Harry William Canning, 83, Died due to complications from Cancer on June 12, 2024, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. His wife and four sons attended him during his last days in hospital.
Harry was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on September 9, 1940, to Bill Canning and Glenda (Cook) Canning, the oldest of 5, brothers Mansell, Gary and Billie, and sister, Grace.
Harry is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Edna Canning, his brother Gary and Shirley, and sister, Grace and Paul, and his sons, Paul (Chris), Harry Jr, ( Melinda), Robert (Barb), and Brian. His Grandchildren, Ashley, Jennifer (Chris), Amanda (Kyle), Matthew (Joey), Kyra, Tyler, Jordan, Kimberly, Kyle, Sierra, Melanie, Kayla, Shane, Kally, Tyson. His nieces, Nadine, Sherree and Kelly. He was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Glenda, his brothers Mansell and Billie, and his nephew, Derek.
Harry Canning grew up in Sydney Nova Scotia, where he met his beautiful wife, Edna Chipman in 1961, on Richmond St, close to where they both lived, at a bus stop. They courted for a year and were married at St. Teresa Church in Sydney on February 16, 1962. They lived in Nova Scotia for about three years, and then in April 1965 moved to Hamilton, Ontario. After the move, Harry worked at Firestone for 28 years till 1993. Then, in 1995 he started working for the Halton District School Board as a Custodian for 12 years, retiring in 2007 at age 67. Harry loved to go for a drive on Sunday to spend time at the park with his family, and then an ice cream treat at Dairy Queen in the evening. Harry enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing horseshoes, and skating in the wintertime.
Every Thursday Night Harry would play darts at the Moose Lodge in Hamilton on Barton Street. He enjoyed socializing and spending time with friends. Just recently, he organized a surprise birthday for his wife, Edna’s 80th Birthday and it will be a wonderful memory.
Harry Canning’s Celebration of Life will be at the Moose Lodge in Hamilton at 1806 Barton Street E. Please join us to celebrate the life of this remarkable Man.
It will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2024, between 1 pm -5 pm and the burial will take place at a later date.
