In Loving Memory of Gareth Thomas
With heavy hearts, we announce that Gareth Thomas passed away on January 29th,
surrounded by loved ones. He faced his illness with extraordinary courage and unwavering
strength, but even through the hardest moments, Gareth’s spirit, laughter, and outlook on life
never dimmed.
Born on November 13th, 1952, in Swansea, Wales, Gareth grew up with deep roots in his
Welsh heritage—something he carried proudly throughout his life. As a young man, he moved
to British Columbia, and later to Ontario, building a life marked by hard work, deep friendships,
and enduring connections with family both near and far.
A talented metal fabricator at Mariani Metals, Gareth took pride in his craft and in the
precision and creativity it demanded. His work ethic carried into every part of his life. He was a
devoted husband, father, Grandad, and friend, known for his gentle wisdom, dark sense of
humor, and larger than life personality.
Gareth valued the simple, meaningful rhythms of family life: Sunday night dinners, long walks
with his beloved dogs, and cherished snuggles with his grandchildren. More than anything, he
wholeheartedly loved his wife. Together for 56 years they took a risk and left Wales to come to
Canada for a better opportunity. What they thought was going to be 2 years turned into an
incredible 51 years with 2 children and 4 grandchildren.
Gareth is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen (nee Fitzgerald); his children Rachel and
Morgan (Paula - Daughter in law); and his four grandchildren—Michael, Claire, Alice, and
Paige—who will forever hold his memory in their hearts. While we grieve the loss of Gareth, we
also celebrate the beautiful life he lived and the countless ways he touched our lives.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the extraordinary doctors and nursing
staff at St. Peter’s, whose gentle care and compassion helped bring peace to Gareth in his final
days. We are equally grateful to the remarkable healthcare team at Juravinski Hospital, who
walked beside Gareth with dedication, expertise, and genuine warmth. Your support meant
more than words can ever express.
May the determination he showed, the toughness he carried, and the humor he shared
remain in our hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society
in Gareth’s memory. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday February 28th from 1-3pm at the Delta United Church (47 Ottawa St South, Hamilton, ON L8K 2C9)
