Elly Broe (nee Rasmussen) (born February 5, 1933) passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, after a lengthy, hard-fought battle against Lewy Bodies disease. She is survived by her four children, Susanne (Paul), Steven (Karen), Stewart (Karen), and Scott (Lisa); nine grandchildren, Marc, Jessica, Erik (Jessie), Shannon (Tarun), Dane (Kristen), Kelsea (Jeff), Rachel (Allen), Jordyn, and Soren; and nine great-grandchildren, Kolby, Rupert, Ben, Lorelai, Felix, Charlotte, Chloe, Araya, and Sophie. She was predeceased by her husband John Broe (April 20, 2003).

Elly left her home in Daugaard, Denmark, to join John in Toronto in 1954, where they married on October 20, 1954. From Toronto, they eventually settled in Hamilton to raise their family. Along with her unabashed love of her homeland, sailing became a huge part of Elly's family life. She was a member of the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club for fifty years, where she volunteered with numerous junior sailing regattas and took on the role of Treasurer of the RHYC Women's Committee in the 1970s and '80s, managing the funds raised for the club and helping to organize the 1988 Inaugural Ball for the 100th anniversary of the club. But she never missed an opportunity to spend a relaxing cruise with John.

In 1998, after retiring from her supervisor role at AC Nielsen, Elly and John began their first of many travel adventures through Canada and the United States, which always included a stop at Disney World, Elly's favorite place in the world—after Denmark—before heading back home to Canada.

She survived WWII, three Atlantic Ocean crossings by ship, and even a bout with Covid in her later years. But she couldn't beat the effects of dementia. The family appreciates the care and support that was given to Elly by Wentworth Heights Retirement Home and, finally, at Idlewyld Manor Long Term Care. There will be a small, private ceremony for her interment alongside her beloved John.
