Elizabeth Jane Wharton

With profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Nana and Granny on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at 10:53 a.m. in her 99th year. She was so proud to be the oldest remaining member of her family and amazed that she had outlived her heroine, Queen Elizabeth II.

She will be forever missed by her children, Alan and Mary Wharton, Barbara and Jim Vacon, Kathleen and Steve Sharkey. Her grandchildren, Alana Wharton and Ian Henderson, Stephen and Lena Vacon, Graeme and Alisha Vacon, Shayne Sharkey and Breanne Varao and Spencer Sharkey. Her great-grandchildren, Madison, Parker and Jack, Brynlee and Rory, Cordelia and Finn. She loved us all equally and unconditionally. Predeceased by her eldest grandson, Ryan Wharton and her husband of 71 years, Frederick Wharton.

The family wishes to thank the caring and compassionate staff at Idlewyld Manor, her home for the last 5 years. They cared for her and loved her as if she was one of their own.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 25 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Macassa Bay Yacht Club, 80 Harbour Front Drive, Hamilton. In the near future, we will take her home to her birthplace in Carnlough, Northern Ireland. Her home and her family were in Canada, but her heart was always in Northern Ireland.

Mom, your tortured brain has been set free. We hope you know how much we all loved you through every step of your struggle with Alzheimer's disease. You will live on in our hearts forever.

Please, no flowers. Instead, if you are lucky enough to have her, call your mother, visit, tell her how much you love her or visit someone living in Long Term Care who never receives a visitor.
