Douglas Albert Patterson

August 18, 1934 — March 29, 2024

It is with profound sorrow we announce the passing of Douglas Albert Patterson (Uncle Doug) unexpectedly

at Juravinski Hospital, with loved ones by his side, on March 29th 2024, in his 90th year. He is predeceased

by his parents Albert Angus and Julia “Hazel” (née Crawford) and his sisters Hazel (Horace) and Ruth (John).

He will be lovingly remembered by his nieces Arlene (Jim) and Andrea (Tony), his great-niece ans nephew Ambur and Andrew.

Also survived by niece and nephew Colleen and Doug and great-niece Laura and many cousins.


He was employed by Stelco in the metallurgy department until his retirement. He traveled the world with friends throughout his life. His love of rowing started at Central High School and continued until his death. He became a member of Leander Boat Club in 1954 where in 1956 won gold in the 5 man crew at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. He served as president of the club for 10 years and served on the executive of Central Ontario Rowing Association. Also from 1970 to 2005 he sat on the Board of Management for Leander. After retirement from competitive rowing he coached many teams including the first McMaster University women’s team, later the first women’s coach for Leander and several high school teams. For more than 70 years he was an important part of the Leander Boat Club family and the rowing community of Ontario. He will be missed by many friends he made throughout his life especially the Leander community. Thank you to the staff at Caroline Place for their kindness and exceptional care for Doug. We would also like to thank the paramedics, emergency staff, the surgical team and the ICU staff and support staff for their care of Doug. At his request there will be no visitation or funeral.

leander.finance@gmail.com or the Canadian Cancer Society. This would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Arrangements were entrusted to Affordable Burial and Cremation.
