Listen to Obituary

Born in Scotland on October 27, 1938, Derek passed away peacefully at home at age 87, with his beloved wife (Edith) and granddaughter (Katie) by his side. Derek was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose kindness and warmth touched everyone who knew him.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Edith; his sons, Scott and Jeffery; and his cherished grandchildren, Lori, Kelly (Christian), and Katie, along with a number of family members and friends who will deeply miss him.

Derek was a truly pleasant and kindhearted man who always had a smile to share and a joke ready to make someone laugh. He had a way of bringing happiness to those around him and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His generosity and caring nature were simply a part of who he was.

Derek was a dedicated and proud employee of the Hamilton Spectator for over 30 years. He had a love for hockey and enjoying the simple things in life, especially spending time cutting wood or having a beer in the garage, always with a friendly wave. A devoted supporter of his family and a very proud Dad and Grandpa. Whether sharing stories, making people laugh, or helping others without ever expecting anything in return, Derek created lasting memories with everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Though his family's hearts are heavy with his loss, they find comfort in the memories he leaves behind and in knowing that his kindness, laughter, and love will never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered and loved. A private cremation has taken place and a celebration of life gathering in his honor will take place at a later date.
