The Cannon and Podetz families are saddened to announce that Uncle Dani passed away suddenly at home on July 11, 2022, in his 87th year. He was the youngest of four children. Dani was predeceased by his parents Nick (1973) and Dora (2007) Podetz and by his siblings, Gladys (2012) and John (1980) Cannon, Leo (2021) and Jean (2021) Podetz and Maria Anton (2016). He will be deeply missed by many nieces and nephews and their families for his huge heart and generous nature. He will be missed by many cousins in Canada and the U.S.
Dani was humble when it came to his incredible artistic talent. He devoted many years as a volunteer creating set designs for Theatre Burlington, Players Guild of Hamilton, St. Thomas More Players, Hamilton Opera Company, and others. Dani won many awards for his set designs at the Western Ontario Drama Festival. He received a City of Hamilton Arts Award for theatre in 2006 as well as numerous awards for volunteering. Dani's creativity was sought after by many in the theatre community that will always remember him. Two of his marionette creations from 1959/1960 are part of a puppet collection held at the Museum of Theatre History in Toronto. Dani had a 40year career with CHCH TV/Channel 11 as head set designer/props on programs including Hilarious House of Frightenstein, The Pig and Whistle, Tiny Talent Time, Romper Room, Smith and Smith and Red Green. In his 80's, Dani kept his creativity alive, beginning a new career writing plays for the Fringe Festival and HamilTEN, along with writing lyrics for Christmas carols.
In keeping with Dani's wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to share stories and memories of Dani at a Celebration of Life on Sunday August 7th from 1 to 5 p.m. at Sacred Heart Parish Community Centre, 24 Poplar Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you support Hamilton Arts, Music and Theatre in Dani's memory.
