Gordon and Sara Reid - Together in Heaven
Loving husband and wife, Gordon and Sara Reid (née Rempel) passed into heaven a few days apart from one another. Sara passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Her husband, Reverend C. Gordon D. Reid, gently passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at St. Peter’s Chedoke Residence. The family is so grateful for the attentive care that staff in both locations provided for our loved-ones.
Gordon and Sara’s life was an incredible adventure of faith. They met in 1961 at a missions conference to which they both arrived early to help set up. For sixty-one years of married life, they lived selflessly and served tirelessly together in various organizations including Officers Christian Union, the Presbyterian Church, Living Fully VMTC Canada, and WEC International. Their journey took them across Canada from the west coast,to the prairies, to central Canada and the maritimes and beyond to California, Liberia and the Netherlands. Gordon served as an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, a minister and a Bible teacher. Sara worked as a Registered nurse providing care to patients in Manitoba, Northern Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Africa. They were passionate about sharing the joy of knowing Jesus throughout their lives. They had a lasting impact on many. Their kindness and generosity touched individuals and families alike. Gordon is remembered for his quirky sense of humour and his keen insight. He always had a dad-joke ready for every situation. His smile was contagious and his presence was welcoming. He was very detail oriented and was famous for packing and repacking the car when the family went on camping trips. Gordon loved the Scripture. So much so, that when he first started following Jesus, he failed his year at Royal Military College because he spent more time reading the Bible than doing homework. Sara is remembered for her humble attitude and hard work. Born during the depression, she worked with her sisters in the garden of their family farm near Winnipeg. She knitted socks for the soldiers during World War II. She committed herself wholeheartedly to any task that was given to her. She trained as a nurse with the grey nuns at St Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg. Her first nursing job included starting a Nurses Christian Fellowship on campus. She cared well for the people around her and blessed many with her kind attention. She told many colourful stories and shared her experiences growing up with her grandchildren often. Gordon and Sara are survived by daughters Winnie and Margie, sons-in-law Robert Gould and Ian Stuart, grandchildren David and his wife Joanne, Beth, Sara, Lydia, Chloe and James, Sara’s sister Elaine Penner and Gordon’s brother Russell Reid. A memorial service will be held at Philpott Memorial Church at 84 York Blvd. in Hamilton on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to WEC International with whom Gordon and Sara served as missionaries for many years or YWAM Canada with whom their grand-daughter Chloe currently works in Europe.
